A business name is the title under which you trade. If you choose to trade under a name other than your own, you must register your business name in each state in which you plan to operate.

Registering for an Australian Business Number (ABN)
An ABN is a unique number that identifies your business to other businesses and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). An ABN is all you need to deal with the ATO and other government departments. It will help you claim GST credits and fulfil your requirements for reporting your business activity to the ATO.
Anyone who operates a business should have an ABN.

Registering for GST with the ATO
All business operators are able to register with the ATO and claim GST credits. Larger businesses must register for GST. If you do not have an ABN you can’t claim GST credits and any amounts you receive from another business are taxed at 46.5%.

Registering for a Tax File Number (TFN)
TFNs are issued to individuals, as well as businesses, and are similar in many ways to ABNs. A TFN is required to avoid withholding tax, when income over $120 per year is earned from an investment, for example, interest earned on the funds in a bank account. TFNs are also needed to lodge an income tax return and for superannuation reporting requirements.
